I've been practicing psychotherapy since 2019. Providing service in within private and community organization. Supporting individuals from 12-95 years of age with challenges of anxiety, depression, addiction, life transitions, loss and relationships. Prior to starting psychotherapy, I had been working in the school board, and youth in conflict with the law to support behavioural change.
My undergraduate degree is in Behavioural Psychology, this provides a foundation for understanding motivation and human behaviour. It is rooted in evidence based intervention, and looks at behaviour apart from personal judgement. I received my Masters in Arts in Counselling Psychology, which further developed my clinical skills, broadened my understanding of barriers in my community and gathered additional tools to support my CBT orientation.
In 2022, I started my own practice to increase time spent with my young family, have more flexibility with how I practice and explore the challenge of being a business owner.
My goal is to continue learning from each situation bad or good. We will explore sleep, diet, exercise, stimulation and other relevant patterns to see correlations. We cannot separate the physiology and psychology by exploring and experiment routines, and placing an emphasis on self-care or personal maintenance.
My approach to most of my client is foundationally CBT, other orientations are used to further understand the thoughts, challenge thoughts, or explore novel perspectives. Cognitively, I would approach the client to understand the thinking that is maintain the behaviour or discomfort that they are wanting to change. Complimenting this is behavioural components, narrative exploring strengths and perspectives, DBT training to prepare for exposures and experiments, self-monitoring and processing emotions.
Using these in creative and complimentary ways has been effective for allowing clients to challenge thoughts in a safe and effective ways, navigate powerful emotions and have some success moving again when feeling stuck.
I have always been drawn to people, and over time grown deep appreciation for the value of sharing and listening intentionally. Having a Christian background and faith, led to opportunity to sit with others in pain and uncomfortable emotions. Participation in athletics, led to interest in the functions of the human body, nutrition, exercise and motivation. In each domain, I always had a curiosity and passion impact of our words on others and to ourselves.
I really like helping people move towards the things they values, whether that is shifting thoughts, processing uncomfortable emotions or learning more about themselves. It is an honour being a part of people's journeys
